Imported Frozen Strawberries

Strawberries, terrific for your smoothies, shakes, and blended desserts!

Strawberry is a widely cultivated fruit that is very much loved for its sweetness, juiciness, aroma and color. This fruit is technically not a berry but it is very tasteful.

Originally grows in the forest but gradually being taken to home gardens and farms for cultivation. 
 

Uses and Servings:

- frozen for smoothies (see recipe below)
- made into preserves, jams
- added to dairy products - milk, milk shakes, ice cream, yogurts
- ingredient for luscious desserts like strawberry pies, strawberry shortcake, gelatos, cakes
- used as syrup for the taho here in the Philippines
- will look pretty on your cheese platter
- flavor for juice, ice creams, milkshakes, and chocolates
- used in artificial flavorings

Nutrition Information and Health benefits:

A serving of 100 grams is already an excellent source of vitamin C (69%) with many other vitamins and minerals (see table below). Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin needed by all body tissues to be able to grow, develop and repair. It is involved in many body functions like the immune system, healing of wounds and maintaining health of of bones and teeth. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps in skin health.

Also a good source of manganese, a micronutrient that plays an essential role in bone structure and metabolism. It helps in collagen production and in skin cells, being an antioxidant. It helps in maintaining brain and nervous system functions and is involved in blood sugar regulation.

Some research show that this fruit may be associated with a decreased risk in cardiovascular disease and that it has phytochemicals which possess anti-inflammatory or anticancer properties.

Consumption of strawberries is also said to be associated with lower rates of hypertension, cancer and inflammation while certain studies suggested that it may have beneficial effects such as lowering blood bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, reducing the increase in blood sugar after a high-sugar meal, and in blood cholesterol after a meal that is high in fats.

Storage:

In the freezer at 0°F (–18°C) or below.

Note: Frozen items, especially for fruits, have the tendency to clump together. It is advisable to thaw the fruits in advance a few hours before use.

Defrosting and Thawing:

Remove from the freezer and put only needed amount to defrost in a secure plastic bag or lidded plastic container.

Place berries in the refrigerator. Slow defrosting from 6-15 hours is preferred.

After, put the pack in a container filled with cold water to make defrosting faster. Place back in the refrigerator as soon as defrosted.

Avoid running the berries under water or microwaving for defrosting to keep from mushy and soggy textures.

Recipe Suggestion:
Frozen Strawberry Smoothie

Ingredients

1 cup frozen strawberries

1 cup milk (low-fat or fat free)

2 pcs raspberries or blueberries (optional)

5 ice cubes

1 tbsp lemon (or Kalamansi) juice

2 tbsp honey or 1 tbsp sugar


Directions

Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth. 

Pour in tall dessert glass and add a teaspoon of honey, if desired. 

Add a decorative straw. Sip and enjoy!

I've been using the frozen strawberries for my smoothies. I wish they make bigger bag size.
